Buying a diamond is usually a new experience for most people, but it does not have to overwhelming.  Understanding the qualities and characteristics of a diamond is straightforward. Bella Fine Jewelry  will explain the characteristics of diamonds and how they influence appearance and price.

Diamond shapes:

The four C’s of diamonds are cut, color, clarity and carat weight.

Shape describes the diamond form (rounds, cushions, princess, marquise, oval…).

All diamond shapes have different   attributes, but beauty is in your own personal taste.

Prices of diamonds vary greatly in regards to different shapes.

Rounds diamonds have the optimal brilliance which is why they are the most popular and the most expensive.  Fancy shape diamonds include all diamonds other than rounds.  Choosing a fancy cut diamond can save you as much as 20% to 40% as opposed to a round diamond with the same size, color and quality.

The cut of the diamond determines its brilliance.  The better the diamond is cut the more it will sparkle.  The more fire it will have.  When a diamond is cut with the right proportions, light is returned out of the top of the diamond.

A diamonds color grades refers to the lack of color.  Diamonds that are white having little or no color receive higher quality grades than those with visible color.  D is the highest color grade while Z the lowest.  The less color the diamond has the higher the color grade.

Most diamonds have small imperfections.  Diamonds with few or no perfections receive the highest clarity grade.  Many of these imperfections are so small they do not affect the beauty of the diamond.

FL/IF: No internal or external imperfections.

VVS1/VVS2: Very Very small inclusions. It is very difficult to see imperfections with the naked eye.

VS1/VS2: Very slightly included.  Imperfections are not typically seen with the naked eye.

SI1/SI2: Slightly included. Imperfections are visible under a 10x magnification and may be visible to the naked eye.

I1/I2/I3: Visible inclusions that may be visible to the naked eye.

Carat Weight:

Carat weight is the measure of a diamonds weight.
